Course Descriptions

Fundamentals of law pertaining to its meaning, resources, norms and its raison d'etre. The rules of law, law-justice relations, resources of law, hierarchy of law norms, human rights, the rule of law, and comparison of different law systems. Differences between private law and public law.

Illustration of “narration” and its types; writing and communication modes; exemplified by masterspieces chosen from Turkish and world literature; exercises in effective writing and public speech.

Necessary skills to examine and analyze complex ideas and to persuasively present the results of research through academic papers and oral presentations at an advanced level of English.

This course aims to discuss political, social, cultural and economic transformations in the 19th century in their relation with the formation of the Republican Turkey and focuses on the modernization process in the early republican period until 1945.

Complementary Elective-I

Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data in order to make decisions. In the course, a basic understanding of data analysis and statistical concepts is taught. Giving the ability to think critically about the quantitative information is aimed. The basic ideas and methods of probability that are required for statistics is introduced in the course.

The rise and evolution of the nation-state system, the operation of balance of power, deterrence, coercion, conflict, diplomacy, crisis management, and the role of international law and institutions in inter-state relations.

The dynamics that have evolved from the French Revolution through the collapse of the empires and the establishment of nation-states. The history of the 19th Century balance of power and the rise and course of conflicts leading to World War I.

Critical thinking skills necessary for international relations. Expressing these ideas through oral presentations, debates and in formal academic research papers.

Political, social and cultural development of Turkey since WWII. Transition to multi-party system, social transformation in 1960s and 1970s, as well as the demographical change, industrialization and new social movements. The coup d'état of 1980 and its aftermath, political and social polarization in 2000s.
